Background of PRoZE

PRoZE Performance Nutrition, based in Scottsdale, Arizona, was formed by nutritional formulator Sanjeev Javia and Sports Medicine Orthopedic Surgeon Dr. Jim Silliman in January 2019 and launched in September 2019.

Dr. Silliman is the co-founder and former president of the prestigious Steadman Hawkins Sports Medicine Clinic and is involved in the clinical research of reduction of drug therapies using genetics and nutrition.

Javia has over 20 years of experience in nutritional supplements and has worked with World Series Champions Curt Schilling & Randy Johnson, Super Bowl Champions Tom Brady & Kurt Warner, Stanley Cup Champions Mike Modano & Dan Hinote, and PGA Champions Tom Pernice Jr. & Phil Mickelson.

Javia started his career as the Executive Vice President at XELR8, Inc, developing several products with the company, which served professional and Olympic athletes.

He was then tapped to build the Nutrition Science Center for the Steadman Hawkins Clinic, which has served professional sports teams such as the Denver Broncos and Colorado Rockies.

Javia founded Javia Wellness Group (JWG) in 2011, where he formulates and designs nutritional and exercise supplements for professional and Olympic athletes and teams.

After researching CBD, Javia began formulating his own CBD products and got excellent feedback from high profile individuals, catalyzing the creation of the original PRoZE lineup.

Customers can find PRoZE products online and at highly credible organizations like the Vincere Cancer Center in Scottsdale, StretchLab locations, and Whisper Rock Golf Club.

“I felt that early on, if I didn’t protect the message, it was going to get diluted, or it was going to get manipulated,” said Javia. “So I wanted to find out who are the groups that would really appreciate this message that I have, and would actually be able to utilize it.”

What Makes PRoZE Unique?

Before building his brand, Javia asked himself why the world needs another CBD brand.

He came up with three reasons:

Synergistic formulations: Many brands are using CBD as the sole figure in their formulations; Javia has designed what he calls synergistic formulations, which stems from his belief that “innovation is in the combination.” Each PRoZE product is comprised of curated ingredients that work together toward an end goal.

“The ingredients are not thrown together,” said Javia, “they have a specific purpose based on a certain philosophy that PRoZE has established for the root issue of your concern.”

Performance: Javia wanted to not only create therapeutic formulations but also ones that enhanced performance.

“Not just survive but thrive,” he said. “The PRoZE products are specifically designed to support the body’s own functions and accelerate health.”

Education: Javia believes people will appreciate his fun and engaging approach to education.

Looking at the PRoZE website’s in-depth “Science” section and the eye-popping packaging of the products, it’s easy to see that the brand has gone full-throttle on both fun and education.

Where Does PRoZE Get Their Hemp?

PRoZE gets their hemp from farms in Colorado that are licensed by the state’s Department of Agriculture.

Several tests are done during cultivation by Agriscience Laboratories and PhytaTech Metric Solutions, including testing for heavy metals, pesticides, mold and yeast, microbes, and cannabinoid potency.

The hemp is grown without pesticides or herbicides, and several of the additional ingredients in the PRoZE product line are organic.

What Extraction Method Does PRoZE Use?

PRoZE only extracts hemp oil from the trichomes and flower of the hemp plant.

The trichomes, which are little appendages that look like hair on the plant, and flower contain the highest concentration of CBD, terpenes, and other compounds.

The company uses organic ethanol to extract its hemp oil, a safe method that preserves cannabinoids and other vital compounds in the hemp plant better than other solvents.

Does PRoZE Use Third-Party Testing?

Yes, PRoZE conducts third-party testing on every batch of their product multiple times, primarily with Agriscience Laboratories, an ISO-17025 accredited lab (ProZE also partners with Botanacor, Atlantic Test Labs, and Think20 Labs).

Most of the third-party lab reports that consumers can see, which are available on PRoZE product pages, only show the cannabinoid potency of the product.

Batch numbers for a product can be found at the bottom of a product.

The manufacturer for PRoZE products has 17 certifications, including: an FDA-registered facility that is GMP and OTC (Over-The-Counter) certified, cruelty-free certified, and toxic free-certified.

After asking a question via their online chat, we initially did not get a reply.

However, within an hour, we had received an email addressing our questions from a friendly and informative representative.

PRoZE Scientific Research

PRoZE has studies currently in process for their NERVE, NODZZZ, and YIPEEZ products.

These are pilot studies that the brand hopes to take into broader, fuller studies.

Future of PRoZE

Looking forward, PRoZE would like to explore products for the digestive system because of new research that has come out.

The brand also works with several doctors on their medical advisory board, such as Dr. Richard Hawkins, who is a co-founder of the Steadman Hawkins clinic, and would like to leverage their work to formulate new products.

Javia also believes that CBD is no fad, and here to stay.

“Out of the 18 years I’ve been formulating,” said Javia, “the reason why guys like me are excited about CBD… is because we’ve never seen an ingredient that works so quickly with such little dosage with so many people.”

PRoZE CBD Oils Review

Concentration

The concentration in SHIELD is 900mg of CBD from broad-spectrum hemp extract (30mg/serving) while NODZZZ contains 250mg of CBD also from broad-spectrum (8.3mg/serving).

According to the batch report, our SHIELD product had 970mg of CBD, as well as trace amounts of minor cannabinoids and THC.

For the NODZZZ batch report, 261mg of CBD were detected, along with CBG and extremely trace amounts of THC.

While THC appeared on the batch reports, PRoZE has the third-party labs test down to hundredths of a percent, which is more specific than most brands.

As for the amount of CBD, SHIELD has a moderate concentration that should be useful for most CBD consumers.

NODZZZ, on the other hand, has a low concentration of CBD.

Per the brand’s philosophy, CBD does not need to be the workhorse in every formulation, which is why PRoZE has combined it with several other ingredients like valerian root, GABA, and melatonin.

Typically, we like to see more CBD, but the synergy between the ingredients is intended to be where the results lie.

Value

SHIELD costs $90, which comes out to $0.10/mg, while NODZZZ is $55 and $0.22/mg.

While these prices are higher than other products, most brands don’t offer this level of formulation.

For a CBD tincture with several additional, high-quality ingredients, SHIELD is very cost-efficient.

While it has fewer milligrams of CBD than SHIELD, NODZZZ has more synergistic ingredients and costs less.

Taking all of this into consideration, our team believes these PRoZE products are appropriately priced.

Packaging

The packaging is one area where PRoZE stands out from the crowd.

Right away, PRoZE ditches rectangular boxes and employs a diamond-like design.

The colors are fun and pop against the black and white backdrop.

SHIELD itself is a standard tincture with a tamper-evident cap, while NODZZZ has a spray pump lid with a plastic cap to prevent unintentional sprays.

They also contain all the necessary consumer information, such as supplement facts, ingredients list, FDA disclaimer, a batch number, and expiration date.

Ingredients

The ingredients in SHIELD include: Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Cannabis Sativa (Whole Plant Hemp) Extract, Ganoderma Lucidum (Reishi Mushroom) Extract*, Withania Somnifera (Ashwagandha) Root Powder*, Curcuma Longa (Turmeric) Root Powder*, Lemon & Lime Flavor Oil, Peppermint Flavor Oil, and Stevia Rebaudiana Extract (* indicates organic ingredient).

SHIELD’s ingredients are intended to help support the immune system, enhance antioxidant concentrations, and promote emotional balance.

The ingredients in NODZZZ include: Purified Water (Aqua), Valeriana (Valerian) Officinalis Root Extract, Cinnamon Flavor Oil, Vegetable Glycerin, Honey, Cannabis Sativa (Whole Plant Hemp) Extract, Magnesium Glycinate, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Lactium, Gamma Aminobutyric Acid (GABA), Vanilla Flavor Oil, Sodium Benzoate, Melatonin, Sodium Alginate, Potassium Sorbate, Xanthan Gum, Stevia Rebaudiana Extract, Sorbitol, Citrus Aurantium Bergamia (Bergamot) Fruit Oil* (FCF), Ocimum Basilicum (Basil) Herb Oil, and Cinnamomum Zeylanicum (Cinnamon) Bark Oil (* indicates organic ingredient).

The ingredients in NODZZZ are intended to help with promoting relaxation, calm, and preparing the body to achieve restful sleep.

Flavor

SHIELD is advertised to have mint and lime flavor, and NODZZZ is supposed to taste like cinnamon and honey.

Our team noticed a sweet mint taste in SHIELD, but most of us could not pick up on the lime flavor.

We enjoyed the flavor of SHIELD, especially since the mint was not overbearing.

NODZZZ tastes strongly of cinnamon, but the honey does come through to an extent, adding a subtle sweetness to cut into the spice.

Effectiveness

SHIELD helped us feel more at peace generally and seemed to provide a slight energy boost.

Since SHIELD intends to provide enhanced immunity, including potentially reducing inflammation, it’s difficult to judge its effectiveness.

PRoZE says that it can act as a daily multivitamin, so we find that its best use is as a daily supplement for general health and wellbeing.

However, NODZZZ has a purpose that we objectively measure, and boy did it work.

After taking around eight to ten sprays (six sprays is a serving size) at least an hour and a half before bed (the label says 10-15 minutes), our team members felt ready for bed.

Not only did NODZZZ prepare them to sleep, but it also helped them stay asleep and wake up feeling more energized and refreshed.

Pros & Cons

Pros for PRoZE CBD oils:

• Packaging for both is fun and eye-catching
• High-quality additional ingredients
• Our team enjoyed the taste of each CBD oil
• NODZZZ was noticeably effective

Cons for PRoZE CBD oils:

• Expensive for the amount of CBD in NODZZZ

PRoZE CBD Topical Review

Concentration

NERVE contains 275mg of CBD from broad-spectrum hemp extract in 1.69 ounces of product (162.7mg/oz).

According to the third-party certificate of analysis for our particular product, like the CBD oils, this soothing cream also has a minuscule amount of THC in it.

The concentration of CBD in NERVE is a little better than the average CBD topical.

Overall, our team was happy with this concentration, especially when considering the added ingredients.

Value

NERVE retails for $70, which clocks in at $0.255/mg.

While this is expensive from the perspective of price per mg, customers are paying for the unique, high-quality formulation in NERVE more than a simple CBD topical.

Plus, when considering that NERVE is specifically designed to help improve performance at the athletic level, a premium price is reasonable.

Packaging

Like all of PRoZE’s products, NERVE also sports unique packaging.

The pump spray bottle comes in a diamond-shaped box emblazoned with a tie-dye PRoZE logo.

Also, to prevent any accidents, PRoZE provides a plastic cap that fits over the pump.

Customers can find an ingredients list, a batch number, and an expiration date on the bottle.

These ingredients are meant to achieve a fourfold objective:

• Relief of muscle soreness
• Ease nerve and joint discomfort

Texture and Scent

The NERVE soothing cream rubs on smooth, absorbs quickly, and does not leave skin feeling greasy nor hands feeling sticky after application.

In around a minute, the cooling sensation of menthol will kick in.

Immediately upon pumping out the cream, the scent of menthol is noticeable.

Our team immensely enjoyed both the texture and smell of the cream.

Effectiveness

NERVE is one of the most noticeably effective CBD topical creams we’ve reviewed.

As some of our team members put it, we could almost feel it going through our skin and into our muscles.

The cooling sensation is intense but not overbearing or uncomfortable.

We rubbed it into sore muscles caused by exercise and found that it significantly relieved the discomfort.

As a result, we saw faster recovery times.

PRoZE CBD Isolates Review

Concentration

GUMEEZ contains 25mg of CBD isolate per gummy for a total of 250mg per box, while YIPEEZ has 10mg of CBD isolate per gum tablet for a total of 80mg.

According to the batch reports for our products, the GUMEEZ had 26.5mg of CBD isolate per gummy, and the YIPEEZ had 10.24mg of CBD isolate per gum tablet.

As expected, the third-party results did not detect any minor cannabinoids or THC.

While CBD isolate is not our ideal hemp extract, it’s often the staple for food-based products like gummies and gum.

PRoZE’s GUMEEZ has a higher concentration than other CBD gummies that also contain CBD isolate, so our team was happy to see that.

CBD gum is an innovative product that few brands offer, so there’s little precedent for what is an appropriate concentration; however, 10mg of CBD isolate seems reasonable to us.

Value

PRoZE charges $50 ($0.20/mg) for GUMMEEZ, while it asks $15 ($0.188/mg) for a package of YIPEEZ.

These both skew on the expensive side, and they’re not necessarily formulated with a medley of ingredients like the other products for specific benefits, so customers are buying a primarily CBD product here.

Packaging

The GUMEEZ box is identical to the other products except for varying colors.

Within the box is a plastic bag with the 10 gummies.

It’s a little challenging to get the gummies out of the bag since they’re stuck together, and the bag opening is a bit small.

We were a little surprised the gummies simply came in a plastic bag considering the premium experience we had with PRoZE.

The YIPEEZ gum comes in a foil pill pack and packaging that contains supplement facts, an ingredients list, and an FDA disclaimer.

Ingredients

Here are the ingredients in GUMEEZ: CBD Isolate, Pectin, Natural Cane Sugar, Water, Natural Flavoring, and Natural Coloring.

According to PRoZE, the ingredients in GUMEEZ are intended to help with peaceful focus and concentration.

The ingredients are also simple and about as healthy as CBD gummies can be.

Here are the ingredients in YIPEEZ: CBD Isolate, Gum Base, Maltitol, Sorbitol, Xylitol, Isomalt, Natural Flavors, Vegetarian Magnesium Stearate, Silicon Dioxide, and Stevia.

The ingredients in YIPEEZ are meant to help with focus, concentration, and mental clarity.

Xylitol is for gum and dental health.

Flavor & Texture

GUMEEZ has strong flavors and almost completely hides the bitterness of hemp with little to no aftertaste.

However, GUMEEZ are very chewy and tend to stick to teeth.

Overall, they’re an enjoyable treat, but some may want to brush their teeth afterward.

Our favorite of the two was YIPEEZ.

YIPEEZ have a refreshing peppermint flavor that lasts a decent amount of time for gum.

The tablets are easy to chew, and we enjoyed them.

Effectiveness

We didn’t notice significant benefits with either product alone, but together, we experienced enhanced concentration.

After eating a couple of GUMEEZ and then chewing on one tablet of YIPEEZ, we felt more productive and could focus on our work without being distracted as easily.

Pros & Cons

• Simplest and healthiest possible ingredients

What Makes American Shaman Unique?

American Shaman is unique from the rest of the CBD industry in three primary ways:

Where Does American Shaman Get Their Hemp?

American Shaman gets their hemp from farms in Montana, Kansas, and Kentucky, all of which are licensed by their respective (state) departments of agriculture.

All of the hemp is non-GMO and grown organically, that is, without pesticides and herbicides.

What Extraction Method Does American Shaman Use?

American Shaman uses ethanol to extract hemp oil from the full plant (all parts exposed to air: flower, leaves, stalk, etc.) at their Montana and Missouri extraction facilities.

Ethanol is a widely used and safe solvent for extraction, typically better at preserving cannabinoids and terpenes than CO2 extraction.

Our team tried the VG Cloud Tinctures, Water Soluble Tinctures, and CBNight Water-Soluble Tincture.

Each of the tinctures contains 300mg of CBD, except for CBNight, which has approximately 120mg of CBN.

Third-party results for our tinctures revealed the following:

• VG Cloud Tinctures: 10.9mg of CBD per serving, which is 327mg of CBD total; other cannabinoids were detected as well.
• Water Soluble Tinctures: 11.9mg of CBD per serving, which is 357mg of CBD total; other cannabinoids were detected.
• CBNight: 4.4mg of CBN per serving, which translates to 132mg of CBN total; other cannabinoids were detected at trace quantities.

With most brands, only 300mg of CBD in a tincture would be far too low for us.

Flavor

The flavor of the tinctures is strong and potent, and with so many flavors, there’s bound to be something that anybody would enjoy.

None of the flavors entirely mask the taste of hemp and the bitterness associated with it; in fact, the bitterness was enhanced, particularly in the Water Soluble Tinctures (we recommend putting them in water, as the name suggests).

Among the VG Cloud Tinctures, our favorite flavor is Strawberry Banana, while the Piña Colada was our favorite of the Water Soluble Tinctures.

We were also met by potent scents as soon as we opened any tincture.

A unique experience for some of us, as soon as the oil touched our tongue, we felt a rush of heat and a tingling sensation throughout our entire palate.

The 500 Topical Cream has no scent whatsoever, which is not surprising considering the ingredients.

However, the Replenishing Face Cream smells strongly of lavender while the Hydrating Body Lotion had a sweet, nutty smell along with an aloe vera scent.

The texture for all of these products is thin, which allows them to spread easily and absorb quickly into the skin.

None of them left our skin feeling greasy, at least not to any significant degree.

Effectiveness

American Shaman’s 500 Topical Cream was helpful to most of our team.

We used it on the neck to relieve stiffness, which provided moderate relief and allowed for better range of motion.

The Replenishing Face Cream seemed to keep our skin moisturized and feeling clean.

Our favorite product in terms of effectiveness was the Hydrating Body Lotion.

Almost immediately upon applying the lotion, our skin felt more hydrated and soft.

This effect lasted more than a moment as well, keeping our skin this way for hours.

After a polarizing debut in 2021, synthetically derived delta-8 THC is currently being addressed by multiple state legislatures.

As for states that did not have an existing infrastructure for regulating adult-use cannabis, such as Oklahoma, South Dakota, and Tennessee, we’re now seeing unique pieces of legislation being drafted to address delta-8 THC. 

Here’s a quick breakdown of each of these three approaches:

Oklahoma

The Oklahoma Legislature is taking a forgiving approach to delta-8 THC with SB 1338, which would essentially lump delta-8 THC into the definition of hemp, exempting it from their legal interpretation of marijuana.

South Dakota

South Dakota is taking a starkly contrasting approach, attempting to criminalize delta-8 THC. More broadly, HB 1054 would criminalize the “isomerization of cannabinoids to make isomers of THC, CBD, or any other cannabinoid.” In other words, they don’t want manufacturers artificially tinkering with naturally derived cannabinoids to produce delta-8 or any other “close cousins,” presumably for the health risks and lack of safety profile knowledge associated with cannabinoids produced this way.

Tennessee

Finally, Tennessee is landing somewhere in between these two extremes, restricting the sale and consumption of delta-8 THC to adults only, similar to alcohol and tobacco products. In order to regulate delta-8 and other synthetically derived cannabinoids, HB 1690 would create a category that separates this group from naturally occurring cannabinoids like CBD, CBG, and so on. 

We expect to see more developments occurring across more state legislatures when it comes to acknowledging and regulating this contentious cannabinoid and other isomers, and will report on those findings as they surface.

Oral CBD Found to Prevent COVID-19 Infection in Humans

New research found cannabidiol (CBD) effectively blocks SARS-CoV-2 replication in human cells. The study was published Thursday in the peer-reviewed journal Science Advances. 

A team of 33 researchers at the University of Chicago and the University of Louisville found people taking 100 milligrams-per-milliliter of high-purity CBD returned positive COVD-19 tests at a lower rate than control groups who did not take CBD. 

Research was conducted on three different groups: humans, human lung carcinoma cells,  and mice.

Scientists hoped to determine if the cannabinoid would regulate the antiviral inflammatory response. 

Initially, researchers pretreated lung cells with CBD two hours prior to infection with the virus.

After 48 hours, researchers found “CBD potently inhibited viral replication under non-toxic conditions.”

The study went on to test three SARS-CoV-2 variants and concluded their ability to infect cells was also inhibited by CBD. 

Combining CBD with THC at a one-to-one ratio suppressed the efficacy of CBD in combating the virus.

Trials were then conducted with mice to determine if an equivalent effect could be found. Mice were treated with CBD for a week before being exposed to SARS-CoV-2. They were then treated for an additional 4 days with CBD.

The findings provided an important insight into the cannabinoid’s effectiveness. “CBD treatment significantly inhibited viral replication in lungs and nasal turbinates … During this period, the mice showed no signs of clinical disease,” the study stated.

“These results establish the pre-clinical efficacy of CBD as an anti-viral drug for SARS-CoV-2 during early stages of infection.”

Finally, researchers analyzed 1,212 patients from the National COVID Cohort Collaborative.

Patients with medically-similar backgrounds were selected for the study.

The research team chose individuals with a history of seizure-related conditions, and subdivided them into those using CBD to treat their symptoms and those who did not use CBD.

Patients using high-potency CBD had significantly lower COVID-19 infection rates than patients from the non-CBD control group.

“Our results suggest that CBD and its metabolite 7-OH-CBD can block SARS-CoV-2 infection at early and even later stages of infection,” the study stated.

This research adds to other recent studies linking cannabis to treatment for the novel coronavirus.

While these findings are clinically significant and a vital step in furthering the fight against COVID-19, the study’s authors advise against using non-medical formulations of CBD as a preventative or treatment therapy at the present time.

How Are Cannabis Companies Surviving Supply Chain Disruption?

Remember when you could walk into a grocery store and buy anything you wanted? Aisle after aisle of beautifully stocked shelves — and if the store didn’t have it, you could just order online and wait for two-day delivery.

It was a luxury many took for granted until the pandemic brought the illusion of abundance to a grinding halt. Supply chain shortages are rocking every industry from car parts to cannabis. 

These shortages are scary for consumers, but they’re downright disastrous for business owners. Look at any industry right now and you’ll see the impact of pandemic closures, labor shortages, raw material deficits, and shipping delays.

Impacting Every Industry 

Soaring plastic prices are challenging several sectors. President of United Solutions David Reilly told Reuters his plastics company is being crushed by resin prices. This is costly news for cannabis packaging companies.

He estimates prices for some types of resin have increased by 100% in the past year. Pre-pandemic, Reilly would have sourced cheaper materials overseas, but shipping delays have increased the cost of freight.

“Right now, producers in North America don’t have the stiff competition that they would if container prices came back down,” said Reilly.

Some companies are even taking fewer orders so as not to disappoint clients with delays.

Tracee McAfee, CEO of cannabis technology company Cryo Cure, said they’re expanding but are reluctant to take on too many orders.

“We’re having enough problems as it is with the supply chain issues right now. Believe it or not, just getting like a super simple part that would take a day or two is now taking two months. It’s very frustrating,” said McAfee.

She’s seeing the effects in her manufacturing partners as well.

“Even our fabricator says, ‘I can’t even get wire brushes for my polishers.’ The simplest things, like caulking, you can’t find locally.”

Transportation Troubles

In the early months of the pandemic, vape companies were the hardest hit. Cartridges were largely made in China, which shuttered many of its factories during initial lockdowns.

Now, cannabis technology companies are struggling to buy computer chips, which are running almost a year out for new orders. Transportation is one factor in the delays. 

Shipping container shortages started nearly a year ago as European and American consumers started bulk buying online.

The desire to avoid in-person contact and hoard extra supplies lead to huge shipments coming in from Asia. When cargo ships would offload, the empty containers sat at ports for weeks or longer.

Slow ports piled up with empty containers because the shipping companies were too busy to retrieve them, while busy ports had such severe labor shortages that ships were circling for weeks waiting to unload.

According to Freightos, a digital booking platform for international shipping, freight from Asia to the U.S. is five times higher than this time last year.

Shipping from Asia to Europe is eight times higher than average. 

Anomalies like the Ever Given cargo ship that blocked the Suez Canal added to the chaos.

Paul Hong, professor of global supply chain management at the University of Toledo spoke with Channel 10 News in Ohio, noting $10 billion in trade flows through the canal each day.

Every hour the canal was blocked cost the global economy about $416 million.

Unusual weather events are further compounding the issue. Massive flooding has caused delays worldwide. In the U.S., Hurricane Ida paused all shipments moving through the Port of New Orleans.

Chief Brand Officer for 710 Spirits Extraction Products Liz Geiselman told MJBizDaily her business in Golden, Colorado is feeling the effects hundreds of miles away. 

“We’re seeing huge logistical issues with freight and transportation. We’re getting close to panic at this point,” said Geiselman.

Natural disasters are rerouting trucks and drivers or causing them to carry relief supplies as opposed to their normal cargo. These same factors are disrupting the supply of oil and gas, leading to higher fuel prices. 

Lamenting a Lack of Laborers

Skilled and unskilled laborers are in short supply. A deficit of factory workers can cause a cascade of supply issues, complicated by a lack of truck drivers to take the goods from factories to distribution centers.

Who’s working at the warehouse to offload the trucks? And more so, where are the retail workers and installers needed to get the goods to customers? 

Bill Conerly, senior economics contributor for Forbes explored the issue in a recent article, “The Labor Shortage is Why Supply Chains Are Disrupted.”

Many people, he said, assume companies that can’t find workers aren’t offering sufficient pay to lure in new talent. “Today’s situation does not justify such skepticism,” said Conerly.

Companies are offering higher wages, but receiving few applicants. Many businesses are reluctant to pass those costs on to customers. 

“A particular company may be able to raise its wages high enough to lure workers from other businesses, but that’s not an economy-wide solution without significant inflation of prices that customers pay,” said Conerly.

“We have seen some inflation, but not enough — yet — to justify significantly higher wages.”

Solutions for Survival

Many in the cannabis space are seeking local partners who aren’t dealing with the same logistical issues as overseas or cross-country providers.

It’s also wise to have multiple providers for the same supplies; if one is impacted by transportation or labor issues, you have alternatives. 

Onfleet, a technology company that builds software for delivery operations, has an up close view of the disruptions impacting the cannabis space.

“Looking ahead, operators need to establish a resilient supply chain that does not rely on options in just one single region and one that takes potential future disruptions into account,” the company said in a recent statement.

Onfleet suggests retailers ask detailed questions of their partners, such as where vendors are sourcing materials, what kind of setbacks they saw during the pandemic, and how they’ve dealt with supply chain disruptions in the past. 

While it’s a trying time for business owners across the globe, these shortages are also building resilience into the companies that survive.

With unpredictable weather patterns becoming more frequent, resourcefulness in the face of adversity will be a near prerequisite for staying in business.

“It’s very challenging now, in manufacturing. We probably picked the worst time in manufacturing history to get into it, but I feel if we can make it through this — we’re going to be great in the future,” said McAfee.

Senate Hopeful Gary Chambers Jr. Smokes Cannabis in Viral Video

A politician intentionally smoked cannabis on camera in an online video ad and the nation is freaking out. Gary Chambers Jr., an up-and-coming politician in Louisiana who finished strong in the U.S. House race last year, is using social media and marijuana to draw attention to his campaign for Senate.

The Democratic candidate for U.S. Senate in Louisiana smoked a blunt (or cannabis-filled cigar) for 37-seconds during an online video ad on Tuesday.

He spent the time listing America’s arrest statistics, noting Black men are four times more likely than white men to be arrested for cannabis possession. Chambers posted the video to his YouTube and Instagram accounts. 

This video is the first time a major-party Senate candidate has admitted to smoking cannabis — let alone showing himself in the act. Chambers is running for Senate in a state that is 33% Black, yet has not elected a Black person to statewide office in 149 years. 

The state has more than 3 million registered voters, yet the current Senate seat, held by Republican Sen. John Kennedy, won the election in 2016 with only 536,204 votes. 

Louisiana’s demographics are strikingly similar to Georgia, which elected two Democrats to the Senate last year. Chambers is hoping the publicity garnered from his public smoke sesh will draw attention to this opportunity for a flip in Louisian’s Senate seat. 

“We need the Democratic party to pay attention to Louisiana the same amount as Georgia,” Chambers told Forbes in an interview Tuesday. “I smoked a blunt, and now everyone’s talking,” he said.

The political newcomer is working to unseat Kennedy, who has nearly $10 million in campaign cash on hand. Chambers has about $170 on hand, according to the Associated Press. He is urging his followers on Twitter to share the ad and donate to his campaign. 

It has been 149 years today since a Black man served in statewide office in Louisiana.

His progressive policies include legalizing adult-use cannabis, extending Medicare coverage to everyone, and supporting President Joe Biden’s legislative agenda. 

Chambers and his campaign team filmed the video in New Orleans, where penalties for cannabis smokers are akin to a violation of the city’s tobacco-smoking regulations. It’s a slightly more lenient policy than the rest of Louisiana, where cannabis possession has been decriminalized since August, 2020. The maximum penalty for possessing up to 14 grams is a $100 fine. 

That’s not the case in neighboring Texas or Alabama. Possession is still a misdemeanor and can lead to smokers being stopped and searched. Searches often lead to more serious or violent police interactions, according to NORML. 

Nationwide legalization would create a standard set of laws for every American citizen, but would require overcoming huge obstacles in Washington. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and other Senate Democrats are pro legalization, but there’s still a lot of stigma around using the drug. Chambers told Forbes that’s hypocritical. 

“I know a bunch of politicians who smoke weed as well as business people,” Chambers said. “Somebody’s gotta go out there and do it. It’s not so controversial.”

Medical Cannabis Expansion Continues to Languish in the UK

Medical cannabis is being embraced on the European continent now more than ever before, with Germany leading the way from an industry standpoint.

Europe recently witnessed its first country legalizing cannabis for adult use when lawmakers in Malta passed a legalization measure last month.

Unfortunately, not every medical cannabis program in Europe is operating at the same level, with the United Kingdom being particularly terrible for medical cannabis.

As of this last summer, only three patients had received medical cannabis products in the United Kingdom, which is obviously a far cry compared to most other European countries.

No Program Expansion on the Horizon

Last year Jeff Smith, the Labour MP for Manchester Wythenshawe in the UK’s Parliament, introduced the Medical Cannabis Access Bill in the House of Commons.

The measure would have expanded the United Kingdom’s medical cannabis program and resulted in many more patients receiving safe access to medical cannabis.

More reforms would have been needed in order for the United Kingdom to get on similar medical cannabis policy footing compared to Germany. However, it would have been a major improvement over the current situation.

Unfortunately, as acknowledged recently by the measure’s main sponsor, the medical expansion bill is basically dead at this point.

An Urgent Situation

The United Kingdom is home to a population of over 67 million people. Many are suffering patients that would benefit from medical cannabis.

Until lawmakers in the United Kingdom pass sensible medical cannabis policy reforms, patients will continue to needlessly suffer.

It is not as if there are no examples of successful medical cannabis programs to learn from. Dozens of countries now have thriving, effective medical cannabis programs in place.

With adult use legalization on the move in Europe, the UK’s medical cannabis program will only look more and more ridiculous and inhumane as time goes by. Unfortunately, there doesn’t appear to be any change on the horizon.
