Five CBD Review

Welcome to our Five CBD review!

After a secret-shopping campaign, a conversation with Five founder JP Larsen, and plenty of product sampling, we’ve arrived at an overall rating for Five CBD.

Our overall rating for Five CBD is 89.1/100.

Speaking of, we use a 27-point ranking system to evaluate every brand we review across the following six key criteria: quality, transparency, website experience, customer service, value, and brand value.

For a complete breakdown of how we score each item, check out this guide.

Before we get to the actual scoring, here’s one of our favorite products.

Recommended Product

Daily Buzz CBD Gummies

These gummies were among the most effective gummies we’ve ever sampled, exerting significantly more noticeable effects than the vast majority of competing brands.

The 50mg concentration and synergistic boost of the generous cannabinoid/terpene content propels these gummies into a category of their own.

They’re easy to take, easy to bring with you, and perfect for people who want to cover up the bitter hemp taste without taking in a ton of artificial ingredients.

How Five CBD Got Started

According to founder JP, Five CBD was launched in late 2020 as an opportunity to bring top-quality CBD products directly to consumers.

Thanks to his already successful track record at Medterra—Five’s parent company—JP and company were able to lean on their experience, resources, and well-established presence in the CBD space to get this new brand off the ground in the middle of a pandemic.

When asked to summarize Five’s mission, the founder told us, “We’re focused on the highest quality product at the best price to the consumer.”

What Makes Five CBD Unique?

The greatest differentiator between Five and everyone else cramming into the CBD industry at the moment is what they call their “fully powered full-spectrum” formulation.

“A lot of the products on the market are diluted with (CBD) isolate to make them cheaper,” said JP in reference to full-spectrum CBD, which is Five’s sole focus.

As their way of one-upping the status quo, Five has vowed to maintain a 5:1 ratio of CBD to minor hemp compounds (terpenes, flavonoids, etc.) in all formulations.

Soon, they’re going to establish a 5:1 ratio of CBD to minor cannabinoids as well.

By sticking to this unconventionally high ratio of minor compounds to CBD, Five is leveraging the entourage effect (strength-boosting action of multiple hemp compounds working together) for greater absorption speed and potency.

They aren’t shy about the THC content, either.

Unlike other brands who only cordon off the bottom half-inch of the product page footer for tiny THC content warnings (or 0.0% THC claims, which are problematic in the case of full-spectrum products), Five THC doesn’t make you dig for this information.

Best of all, their lean, direct-to-consumer model allows Five to keep prices low while competing against the biggest names in CBD for highest product quality.

Our Five CBD Review

From product packaging to CBD research ventures, the following categories are designed to provide the most comprehensive brand review possible.

Each category is weighted based on the number and importance of sub-criteria within it, contributing to a total score out of 100.

Let’s start with the all-important issue of quality.

Quality

Max score = 35
Five CBD = 30.75

More than the hemp extract itself, we take into account packaging, sourcing, product variety, and several other factors when grading brands based on quality.

Product Quality

Five’s gummies, capsules, and oils are packaged in durable matte white bottles.

All of the packaging was completely intact after shipping, but there’s no product description on the bottle, resulting in a small deduction.

We found no products that contained artificial ingredients, and only the gummies have added sugar.

All hemp is reliably sourced from Oregon farms, and the high ratio of hemp compounds to CBD earns full marks for hemp quality and sourcing.

We would like to see more use-specific formulations (i.e., “rest,” “relax,” and “active,” etc.) in the future, as Five currently has melatonin-infused CBD gummies for sleep and no other use-specific formulations.

Testing and Certification

All Five products are tested by an ISO-accredited third-party lab (Green Scientific), and the Certificates of Analysis (COAs) are thorough, providing detailed readouts on:

  • Cannabinoid content
  • Pesticides
  • Residual solvents
  • Microbes
  • Heavy metals

Considering Five’s Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) and ISO 9001 certification, which is earned for consistent product quality, we award Five full points for testing and certification.

Extraction Method

Finally, Five uses CO2 to extract CBD from the hemp plant.

This is considered the gold standard for its safety and efficiency, since CO2 can be consistently removed from the extract with negligible amounts of residual solvent—full points here.

Transparency

Max score = 12.5
Five CBD = 9.375

The more included a customer feels in the inner workings of a brand, the more comfortable they are investing (or not investing) in the product.

As such, we reward brands for openly sharing information beyond the customary taglines and product descriptions.

Here’s how we break it down.

Info Accessibility

Customers can access Certificates of Analysis for all Five products on their website.

Product pages are well supplied with beginner-friendly information, nutrition/ingredient info, etc., yet at the same time attractive and easy to navigate.

The “About Us” section furnishes a solid introduction to the Five hemp extract and the brand’s quality standards, but it doesn’t feature any staff bios.

Supply Chain Transparency

As mentioned, Five uses a direct-to-consumer model.

They source their hemp from Oregon farms and ship the products straight to customers.

We were able to find most of this information fairly easily on the Five site.

Website Experience

Max points = 7.5
Five CBD = 7

Pandemic or no pandemic, brick-and-mortar or online only, it’s never been more important for brands to provide a seamless online experience.

We reward points for mobile responsiveness, educational resources, and the overall ecommerce experience (browsing products, checking out, etc.)

Product Navigation and Purchasing

Browsing and the checkout process were clean and intuitive; we found no bugs or design flaws.

The site also earns full points for mobile responsiveness, which refers to how well-adapted it is for smartphone users (formatting, page load speed, etc.)

Site Content

Newbies to full-spectrum CBD or anyone looking to learn more about how CBD affects the body in general can peruse the full-spectrum CBD breakdown on Five’s site.

This introduction covers the endocannabinoid system, the entourage effect, and more.

Customer Service

Max points = 10
Five CBD = 9.5

Truly competitive brands approach customer service as a frontline issue, not an afterthought.

Prompt and accommodating customer service is especially important in an environment as fraught with misinformation as the CBD space.

This is why we reward brands for putting in the effort to meet their customers where they are with strong support services and flexible policies.

Contact Options and Responsiveness

Five offers the three customer support channels we look for: phone, messenger, and email.

The messenger response time was extremely short, the phone service/email response time was above average, and we reached a real human each time.

Shipping and Return Policies

We awarded full marks for the shipping and return policy, which is in line with most of the leading brands across CBD and other industries: 30-day return policy with receipt, Five will send the shipping label and instructions.

Value

Max score = 10
Five CBD = 8.69

Because CBD products can come in so many concentrations and varieties (which means broad fluctuations in price), we make sure to weigh price against ingredient quality so that both ends of the price spectrum can have equal opportunity to score well (or poorly).

Pricing and Ingredient Quality

The cheapest CBD oil you can find from a well-established brand costs just $0.02/mg, a stubborn threshold that Five gets surprisingly close to with their 6000mg CBD Oil Tincture, which costs $0.029/mg.

Considering how powerful their full-spectrum hemp extract is, Five more than made up for falling short of the $0.02/mg mark—there’s a prime example of the quality-vs-price mechanism in action.

Not to be outdone twice, Five actually took the crown for cheapest CBD gummies (also included in article linked above) at $0.04/mg with their Daily Buzz gummies.

This is one of the few gummies packing 50mg of CBD per piece in addition to a bountiful cast of supporting cannabinoids and other hemp compounds.

Brand Value

Max score = 25
Five CBD = 23.5

One way to easily conceptualize a company’s brand value is with the following question: What would happen to company x’s industry and local/global community if they were suddenly removed from existence?

Brand value is the impact that a company makes on its surroundings, whether or not that is related to the industry the company is in.

More specifically, we define this somewhat elusive idea as the level of community and industry involvement, regulatory and legislative involvement, product innovation and knowledge, and more.

Product Innovation and Institutional Knowledge

Five is really good at what they do—raising the bar for well-balanced, full-spectrum CBD products.

However, this is more of a quality standard than a true innovation, and because their formulations, delivery methods, etc. are otherwise consistent with the majority of leading CBD brands, we’ve applied a medium-sized deduction in the area of product innovation.

They earned full marks for industry knowledge, considering how influential Medterra has been in the CBD industry.

Community, Research, and Legislative Involvement

We decided to give Five credit for Medterra’s efforts in these areas, mainly because of the large overlap in leadership between the two brands (and because Five is so young).

That said, Five and/or Medterra have been actively involved in pro-CBD legislation efforts as board members of the US Hemp Round Table.

They’ve also supported/are supporting several studies, including animal trials testing CBD for osteoarthritis and others.

Finally, Five and Medterra have joined forces with the Susan G. Komen and Realm of Caring foundations, and they offer military and veteran discounts.

Our Five CBD Overall Rating

All tallied, Five CBD earns an overall rating of 89.06/100.

We were most impressed with the combination of high-quality, potent hemp extracts and competitive pricing.

This adds credence to the words of founder JP, who told us,“We’re not doing crazy sponsorships, we don’t have corporate offices. We’re just bringing high-quality products straight to the consumer.”

Here’s a summary of our key takeaways for anyone considering Five CBD:

  • Strong, well-balanced full-spectrum extract rich in CBD and supporting compounds
  • Competitively priced products across the board
  • Knowledgeable and experienced team
  • Practical, attractive website
  • Full-spectrum only, not recommended for the THC-weary

All things considered, Five CBD is a great choice for anyone serious about getting the most out of a full-spectrum product at a very reasonable price.

Five, What’s Something You Wish More People Knew About Hemp-Derived CBD?

It’s our custom to ask this question as a way of bringing actionable insights from key players in the CBD industry directly to customers.

Here’s what JP told us:

“Everyone needs a quick rundown on what CBD actually is, how it affects your body, and the difference between isolate/broad-spectrum/full-spectrum.”

Conclusion

In the small window of time since their inception, Five has already managed to get out of Medterra’s shadow by doing two things very well:

  • Setting a higher standard for full-spectrum CBD formulations.
  • Saving customers money on top-tier CBD products with their lean business model.

Where they fall behind in variety of extracts, they gain ground in full-spectrum CBD potency and quality.

Their products are clean, effective, and affordable, and the Five leadership team knows what they’re doing.

We recommend Five to anyone comfortable with hard-hitting full-spectrum CBD products, THC and all.

Elixinol Liposome CBD Oil Review

Welcome to our Elixinol Liposome CBD Oil Review!

It’s not surprising to see a brand as innovative as Elixinol show up early to the liposomal CBD party, a delivery method that allows faster and more efficient CBD uptake (as compared to conventional CBD oil).

High-tech innovation aside, no brand is above the need to maintain competitive pricing, high-quality ingredient lists, informative and durable packaging, and so forth.

As such, we put this broad-spectrum product through our usual rating system, assessing everything from the box it came in to the effects it had on our testers.

Here’s what we learned.

Elixinol Rapid Reset CBD Liposome

Concentration

300mg (5mg/serving)

Value

Click “learn more” for price.

Ingredients

Hemp extract (aerial parts), cannabidiol (CBD), purified water, phosphatidylcholine, capric/caprylic triglycerides, plant sterols, dL-alpha tocopherol, monk fruit extract, lemon oil, orange oil, citric acid monohydrate, potassium sorbate, sodium benzoate, sodium chloride.

Concentration

This Everyday Rapid Reset Liposome “oil” provides 300mg of CBD in a 30ml bottle.

Per the packaging, a serving is five pumps, and each serving provides five milligrams of CBD.

Here is the cannabinoid breakdown according to the certificate of analysis for the product we sampled:

  • CBD = 10.00mg/mL (300mg total)
  • CBG = 0.15mg/mL (4.5mg total)
  • THC = ND (non-detectable)

As expected, the product passed all tests for residual solvents, toxins, and other contaminants.

The CBD content is right on the money, THC is as it should be for a broad-spectrum product, and the supporting cannabinoid concentration is a little on the low side.

Overall, it’s a solid lab report.

We aren’t docking points for low CBD concentration because liposomal delivery is so much more efficient than standard methods, as per this study from Quicksilver Scientific, LLC and many concurring findings.

Value

This liposome-enhanced CBD product retails on Elixinol’s website for $44.99, which reduces to just under $0.15 per milligram of CBD.

Generally, we consider brands in the $0.04-$0.07 range to be competitively priced, and everything from $0.08 to $0.14 to be middling.

In this case, we’re willing to lump the Rapid Reset Liposome product into the middle category, considering the way it one-ups virtually every product on the market in terms of absorption efficiency.

If and when more brands adopt this technology, we will have more context with which to accurately assess price.

Packaging

As with most Elixinol products, the inner container is housed in a small box.

On the box are featured all the basic product facts you need (supplement facts and ingredient lists, basic product info, suggested use, etc.), two extra blurbs about the product itself and Elixinol, a US Hemp Authority Seal, and a QR code for accessing third-party lab reports.

The container—a darkly tinted glass bottle with a pump top—contained all of the same information with the exception of the two blurbs.

Everything was pristine upon receipt, and the pump top was clearly engineered to prevent messy residue buildup, which is no small benefit.

Overall, the packaging was durable, high quality, and informative.

Ingredients

Here is the verbatim ingredient list for the Elixinol Everyday Rapid Reset Liposome:

Hemp extract (aerial parts), cannabidiol (CBD), purified water, phosphatidylcholine, capric/caprylic triglycerides, plant sterols, dL-alpha tocopherol, monk fruit extract, lemon oil, orange oil, citric acid monohydrate, potassium sorbate, sodium benzoate, sodium chloride.

Featuring only gentle preservatives, natural flavoring, and the welcome addition of dL-alpha tocopherol (a strong antioxidant), this ingredient list is as clean and minimalistic as we could have hoped for something more complex than standard CBD oil.

Flavor and Texture

We thought this might be a unique experience in the flavor department, and it was indeed.

On the one hand, the smooth and creamy texture is reminiscent of most CBD oils, thanks to the fat content and natural oils.

On the other hand, this product has a “milky” taste overlaid on strong notes of citrus (orange and lemon) oil, which really gave it an orange julius kind of vibe.

The citrus was fairly bitter, but in our experience, most customers will take citrus bitterness over the alkaline hemp taste, so we consider that a preferable exchange.

Overall, our testers enjoyed the taste, especially after acclimating to the surprise factor.

Effectiveness

Without question, this product is the fastest to act, but there’s a caveat: you have to double or triple up on doses.

Yes, the liposome-enhanced formulation has been proven to deliver more of each milligram of CBD, but even at 100% efficiency, a five milligram dose is just a five milligram dose.

That said, taking triple doses (fifteen pumps, fifteen milligrams) in the morning and evening produced effects in record time—about twenty or thirty minutes compared to the standard hour and a half or more.

As to the benefits themselves, we noticed a stronger sense of calm and focus than most other products.

In fact, this is one of the few products that we were able to consciously feel working, while still not feeling drowsy.

It was more than the edge being taken off; it was an uplifting feeling that informed more positive thought processes and much calmer responses to adverse situations.

On the focus front, we were able to focus on nothing (i.e., meditating or trying to sleep) just as efficiently as what most of us 21st-century humans are already good at—dealing with fifteen stimuli at once.

Overall, we were definitely impressed with both the speed and intensity of this product’s effects, but the triple-dosing requirement does put a ding on value.

Pros & Cons

Let’s start with the pros:

  • Much faster acting than standard CBD oil
  • Effective at promoting calm
  • Pleasant flavor and texture

And now the cons:

  • Multiple doses required for benefits

Elixinol Rapid Reset CBD Liposome

Conclusion

As both consumers and industry insiders, we still have a lot to learn about emerging innovations in CBD delivery methods, but we can say first hand that this product is doing something right on the absorption front.

The Everyday Rapid Reset Liposome formulation absorbs quickly, produces noticeable effects, and charges less of a premium than you might think.

We would love to see greater concentrations in the future, but for now, this product is an excellent option for people who want fast, potent results.

We recommend this product to anyone looking to escape the stress of the day naturally and safely.

Is Self-Regulation Essential to Effective Legislation?

TESTSTSARDSAR

Is Self-Regulation Essential to Effective Legislation? by Dan and Andrea Delaney

The cannabis industry is characterized by regulatory uncertainty and volatility. State-by-state variation, frequent updates to the rules of the road, and an ongoing “will they or won’t they” federal stance have made it clear that this is not an industry for the risk-averse or the timid.

Add to that a relative newcomer on the scene, delta-8 THC. Over the past two years, federal courts have wrestled with the legal status of hemp-derived THC products.

The legalization of hemp derivatives and extracts in the 2018 Farm Bill, combined with the capacity to derive delta-8 THC in psychoactively potent amounts, has created a gray zone.

Companies are allowed to manufacture and sell products that mimic the effect of a cannabis high without all the legal and regulatory hurdles that accompany cannabis.

How you feel about this depends on where you sit. If you’re in the hemp or CBD space, it’s a good thing. You have a legal product to sell that is attractive to consumers.

If you’re in the regulated cannabis space, this is a problem.

You have incurred immense costs navigating a highly regulated industry and you’re watching competitors zip by you, grabbing market share with a fraction of the headaches.

There’s a large, common problem on the horizon, however: state regulatory policy. To understand it requires taking off the industry hat and putting on the regulator’s hat.

Most industry analyses are written from the perspective of the businesses and the investors. How does this rule affect the bottom line? What’s the impact on attractiveness to investors?

How do we adjust the business plan to the current environment?

Effective planning calls for thinking like regulators and considering the problems they are solving.

What’s the regulatory capacity to oversee the CBD space? Are we funded for it? Do we have the staff to do it well? Are the political players who matter (as opposed to opinion polls) pro-cannabis or anti-cannabis?

Regulators’ analysis of those questions will shape the policies that impact your business.

Effective planning calls for thinking like regulators and considering the problems they are solving.

State regulators are in a bind. Will they follow the 13 states that have already banned delta-8, like New York and Washington?

Will they stay hands-off like most of the South and Midwest? Will they hedge, like California and Arizona?

On the one hand, there’s a burgeoning industry promising economic development. On the other, there’s little guidance from the federal government on the safety or effectiveness of delta-8 products.

Should regulators promote the business opportunities or focus on consumer protection? Whatever approach they take, they’ll face criticism and pushback.

Add to that the potential to throw the cannabis baby out with the hemp bathwater.

Understanding the regulator’s dilemma points to the industry solution: robust self-regulation.

There’s nothing regulators appreciate more than being presented with answers to their problems instead of criticism of their responses.

Vetted, coherent standards from respected industry associations like NACB can help regulators help the industry.

Instead of waiting to see if the next move by state government helps or hurts your business planning, why not prompt them to make decisions aligned with your plan?

This takes organization and a willingness to invest in proactive policy engagement. But in the end, that investment is short money compared to discovering that your product line is illegal or irrelevant.

Brittney Griner Freed From Russian Prison Sentence of Nine Years

TESTSTSARDSAR

Brittney Griner Freed From Russian Prison Sentence of Nine Years by Aron Vaughan

WNBA star Brittney Griner has been released from a Russian prison colony in a prisoner exchange, President Joe Biden confirmed Thursday.

“She’s safe, she’s on a plane, she’s on her way home,” Biden said from the White House, where he was accompanied by Griner’s wife, Cherelle, and administration officials.

Going in the other direction is arms dealer Viktor Bout, nicknamed the “Merchant of Death.”

Bout is a former Soviet Army lieutenant colonel who, according to U.S. officials, was trying to sell weapons to be used against Americans. Bout was serving a 25-year sentence at a federal prison in Marion, Illinois, and was set to be released in August 2029, according to the Federal Bureau of Prisons.

Griner was detained Feb. 17 at Sheremetyevo International Airport in Khimki while returning to Russia to play basketball during the WNBA’s off-season, just a week before Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24.

The Olympic gold medalist was arrested on drug charges after Russian officials alleged Griner had several THC vape cartridges in her possession.

Griner faced a 10-year maximum prison sentence and was detained indefinitely leading up to her trial.

Biden said the “past few months have been hell for Brittney” but that she is in good spirits, after speaking on the phone with her from the White House.

In a statement, Biden insisted he never forgot Griner. Despite Derek Maltz, who oversaw the Drug Enforcement Administration’s investigation of Viktor Bout, being reportedly unhappy about the exchange, the Biden administration said it was the only path to setting Griner free.

“Through multiple, multiple engagements, the Russians made clear that the only route to securing Britney’s return was a release of a Russian national, Viktor Bout,” said a Biden administration official. “In the last 48 hours, as this had all come together, Brittney was moved from the penal colony where she was being held to Moscow, and this morning, she was brought to the United Arab Emirates, where she was met by U.S. officials.”

On ESPN’s “First Take” Thursday morning, South Carolina women’s basketball coach Dawn Staley, who has talked daily on her social media accounts about Griner’s situation, said the news of Griner’s release moved her to tears.

“I cried,” Staley said, “and I’m a girl from Philly, we don’t cry very easily. But I cried, because this is the moment we’ve all been praying for. I know her heart is for the voiceless, I think her voice will be as strong as strong can be … when she speaks out, when she advocates for those who have been in the position she’s been in, that we continue to wrap our arms around her, to make sure she has the strength to continue to endure the fight that’s ahead of her — because there’s a fight.”

However, Paul Whelan, a Michigan corporate security executive jailed in Russia since December 2018, is still in Russian custody.

Whelan was arrested on espionage charges that his family and the U.S. government have said are baseless.

“We’ve not forgotten about Paul Whelan,” Biden said. “We will keep negotiating in good faith for Paul’s release.”

A Look Back at Some of 2022s Notable Cannabis Events

TESTSTSARDSAR

A Look Back at Some of 2022’s Notable Cannabis Events by Cannabis & Tech Today

In each issue of Cannabis & Tech Today, the editorial team takes a moment to reflect on the last quarter’s cannabis events. Spring of 2022 was loaded with exciting, in-person gatherings celebrating a return to live networking. Check out a few of our favorites in this event wrap up.

Regenerative Cannabis Live

Let’s kick off these wrap ups at the United Nations building in New York City. Over 200 people from various disciplines and backgrounds from around the world came together to discuss how the cannabis industry can align with the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals.

Powerhouse speakers and panels with tons of star power were only eclipsed by the magnitude of being at the UN.

Considering all the history associated with cannabis and hemp prohibition around the world, it was powerful to see the focus shift toward solving worldwide problems and getting people out of poverty and prison.

Regennabis, an advisory and investment services firm, hosted the event. Learn more about its work in this issue’s ESG department (p. 32).

Emerald Cup Awards

The 18th Annual Emerald Cup Awards kicked off at the Ricardo Montalbán Theatre in Los Angeles, California.

Legacy farmers mingled with Hollywood celebrities to create one of the cannabis industry’s most anticipated events.

The event recognized dozens of top-quality growers and producers for their hard work establishing California’s cannabis marketplace.

The evening culminated in actor and activist Woody Harrelson receiving a “Willie Nelson” Lifetime Achievement Award for his decades of cannabis advocacy.

Athletes in Cannabis

The Athletes in Cannabis event in May was exactly what it sounds like — athletes and cannabis.

It was held at a cozy airport hotel, so getting to the show was a breeze.

There were a lot of compelling panels and talks by a variety of pro and college athletes.

Every attendee had access to the speakers and exhibitors and they even fed everyone pizza on the last day!

Jeff Walter puts on a great little show.

ExpoCannabiz Business Conference and Expo

One of Latin America’s premier networking events is ExpoCannaBiz.

Day one featured a cannabis investing forum for public and private investors seeking to expand their portfolios.

It offered educational opportunities and an investor pitch contest with some of the industry’s up-and-coming brands.

Speakers included Aunt Zelda’s co-founder Mara Gordon, Cannabis & Tech Today editor-in-chief Charles Warner, and former NFL player Marvin Washington.

The historic port city of Cartagena along the coast of Colombia was the perfect backdrop to this event. The region is poised to become a leader in cannabis production for all of South and Central America.

This event was put on by Julian Tobar and keynote by Kevin Harrington. It wasn’t the biggest event in terms of attendance but the networking was top notch, and the exhibitors were ready to do business!

The New York City Cannabis Parade & Rally

The NYC Cannabis parade was happening during a monsoon-type storm, but that didn’t stop National Cannabis Party (NCP) members along with NCP President Sephida Artis-Mills and Co-Founder Redman from speaking to a wet but enthusiastic crowd at the end of New York’s longest-running cannabis parade.

International Cannabis Business Conference Berlin

Europe is expanding its cannabis footprint as several countries are considering legalization over the next year. ICBC Berlin took place at a pivotal time for Germany’s evolving cannabis landscape and featured some of the country’s preeminent thought leaders.

Burkhard Blienert, Germany’s drug commissioner, keynoted day one. Day two featured insights from keynote speaker Lewis Koski, Metrc’s chief strategy officer.

Master of Ceremonies Ngaio Bealum brought his lighthearted brand of comedy to the proceedings that culminated in an after party featuring reggae sensation Morgan Heritage with Rocker T.

It was a grand experience conveniently held in one of the largest hotels in Europe, so getting to the show was easy. ICBC is truly a leader when it comes to content, networking, and epic after parties.

KushCon Tampa Bay

The Tampa Bay Convention Center hosted 150+ exhibitors and dozens of speakers for KushCon’s two-day event this August.

Educational sessions touched on frequently asked questions in the sector, ranging from cannabis and pets to brand development.

Athletes in Cannabis offered an insightful panel featuring former NFL players Ian Beckles and Lofa Tatupu.

Cannabis Efficiency Specialist Nichole West stopped by the Cannabis & Tech Today booth during the event. She was once featured in C&TT’s NACB department to discuss her cannabis-related incarceration.

West is the director of operations for LB Atlantis and spoke in three seminars during KushCon.

Citing Regulatory Holdup Molson Coors Steps Back from CBD Beverages

Citing Regulatory Holdup, Molson Coors Steps Back from CBD Beverages

As first announced on the Molson Coors Blog in mid-November, the beverage industry giant has officially resolved to terminate its joint venture with Hexo, a Canada-based manufacturer of cannabis products.

As of December 31st, Truss USA—the joint venture—will officially be dissolved, effectively withdrawing Molson Coors and their CBD-infused, non-alcoholic beverages from the American CBD beverage market completely.

The joint venture was officially launched in 2020, as Molson Coors sought to be an early entrant to the CBD beverage space, but a mostly stagnant two years of legal battling on both the state and federal level has left the company feeling cramped in terms of profitability.

In an email to the US-based distributors affected by the decision, Molson Coors President of Emerging Growth Pete Marino explained, “The key for us is to go big behind what’s working and smartly pivot out of what isn’t working from a scale standpoint, like CBD beverages.”

Aptly voicing the concern of many others in the hemp industry beverages or otherwise, Marino blamed this lack of scalability in the CBD space with the apparent lack of a “near-term pathway to federal legalization,” per the blog.

As for what else is and isn’t working, Marino expressed the desire of Molson Coors to invest more into ZOA (an energy drink), Five Trail (an American whiskey), and other products/partnerships they continue to support.

However, Molson Coors appears to have left the door cracked open, explaining they would consider a return to CBD beverages if the regulatory landscape proved fertile in the future.
