The cannabis plant is one of the most dynamic plants on earth, and as such, it’s also a very fun plant to cultivate. Whereas some plant varieties take a long time to grow from start to finish, the cannabis plant matures very quickly when cultivated properly.
As with most crops, there are different subvarieties of the cannabis plant, often informally referred to as ‘strains.’ Different strains have different properties, with some of those properties being more or less desirable than others.
The concept of differing desirability levels of properties and attributes among crop varieties is far from unique to cannabis, and cultivators of all types of crops have used a method known as ‘grafting’ over the years to combine the best attributes of multiple varieties of one or more crops.
Australian Study
Scientists in Australia recently grafted multiple cannabis varieties using what they described as a ‘new’ way to graft cannabis plants.
“We developed a grafting methodology specifically for medicinal cannabis, involving a single step, in which a freshly cut scion is grafted to a freshly cut donor stem that will become the rootstock. This study also aimed to uncover a potential role for roots in influencing cannabinoid content,” the researchers said.
“Two varieties with desirable attributes but cultivation limitations were selected to act as scions. The first, “CBD1” was a high CBDA accumulating variety with low biomass yield, and the second, “THC2”, was a high yielding, high THCA accumulating line with inconsistent root development during cloning. Two candidate rootstocks, “THC9r” and “THC8r”, were identified; both were high THCA, low CBDA varieties,” researchers said.
“Our results present a new grafting method for medicinal Cannabis that improved yield in THC2 and required no additional cultivation time,” the report said.
What Is THCA?
For those that are new to cannabis or are not very familiar with the cannabis plant’s chemistry, the cannabis plant is comprised of dozens of cannabinoids. Two of the most popular and well-known cannabinoids are tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD).
THCA is far less known, although that is changing as time goes by. THCA stands for tetrahydrocannabinolic acid and it is the precursor to THC. As with most, if not all, cannabinoids THCA possesses wellness properties.
As more becomes known about THCA, global demand will increase, and that increase in demand will no doubt be met by savvy entrepreneurs that bring THCA to the marketplace in whatever manner is permitted.
With that in mind, being able to boost THCA yield is a good thing, especially when considering that the scientists in Australia indicated that no additional growth time was necessary to achieve the higher THCA yield when incorporating their grafting method.
Attorneys representing a cannabis biopharma conglomerate and federal cannabis cultivation license applicant filed a petition in court today, citing that the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) is taking too long to issue a determination for its application.
The petition, filed by Megan Sheehan of Sheehan and Associates in Rhode Island Federal District Court, is for a “Writ of Mandamus,” or an order from a court to an inferior government official(s) to properly fulfill their official duties or correct an abuse of discretion. The filing also contains a declaratory and injunctive relief complaint.
MMJ BioPharma Cultivation (MMJBC), MMJ international Holdings (MMJIH), and MMJ BioPharma Labs (MMJBL) filed the petition via Sheehan to ask the court to direct the DEA to issue a determination regarding the status of its applications for a Schedule 1 Bulk Manufacturing Registration and Importing Registration.
MMJ BioPharma Labs contends that the DEA has violated federal statutes and regulations concerning controlled substances by failing to decide on the company’s application for manufacturing.
The company is further requesting “declaratory and injunctive relief” as a result of the DEA’s violation of the Administrative Procedures Act (APA) for the DEA’s “unreasonable delay in determining the outcome of its applications for registration for marihuana manufacturing and importing for clinical trials.”
Executives of MMJBC spoke exclusively to Cannabis and Tech Today about their frustration surrounding the DEA’s lengthy process.
Dr. Elio Mariani, CEO of the MMJ triumvirate and a career pharma specialist of over 40 years, said, “We will get to the bottom of this unnecessary delay. Regrettably, we have had to take this course of action.”
Mr. Duane Boise, President of the MMJ companies, insists that he has thoroughly investigated how the DEA has already issued registrations to other applicants.
“Needless to say, they are not applying the same standards of approval consistently across the country,” said Boise.
Boise maintains that the DEA has missed its self-imposed deadline for a determination.
“I’m entirely flummoxed by the unconscionable dilatory conduct of the DEA. It constitutes nothing less of a dereliction of duty to MMJ, which has attended with excruciating detail to fulfill the requirements of the law,” said the Chairman of the Board of the trifecta of companies and practicing lawyer for over 50 years, Tim Moynahan.
“That duty extends to all applicants, and it requires fundamental fairness and equal protection under the law. The denial of those principles to MMJ creates a laundry list of questionable actions on the DEA’s part, which is violative to the rights of all citizens,” Moynahan continued.
Cannabis and Tech Today spoke to a representative in the DEA’s national office who refused to publicly comment when questioned why some applications were processed but not MMJBC’s. The agent suggested contacting the local field office for clarification; however, representatives for the DEA in Rhode Island and Boston could not be reached for comment.

On Wednesday (Apr 6th), seventeen of the U.S. Hemp Roundtable Board of Directors and staff members flew to D.C., where they met with multiple members of Congress, including U.S. Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY), to voice their support for federal regulation of CBD, hemp business financial and other protections, and The Hemp Advancement Act.
As reported by the roundtable, the “D.C. Fly-In” involved upwards of a dozen meetings (as well as some virtual meetings held this week) with approximately twenty members of congress, focusing on a number of highly important issues related to current and future hemp regulation.
Chief among these issues was “the big one”—FDA regulation of CBD—which Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell personally discussed with U.S. Hemp Roundtable members.
Other top-level directives strategized around in the additional meetings included supporting a number of hemp bills that would classify CBD as a dietary supplement (S. 1698 and H.R. 841), clarifying and improving existing Farm Bill provisions (H.R. 6645, The Hemp Advancement Act of 2022), and protecting “depository institutions” from penalty for servicing legitimate cannabis businesses (SAFE Banking Act).
The general consensus by the roundtable following their polite incursion into Capitol Hill was that bi-partisan support of pro-hemp legislation is still very much alive after a long stretch of virtual meetings and letter writing.
Per Roundtable president Pete Meachum, “After a too long absence from in-person meetings, yesterday was a very welcome opportunity to sit down with some of our biggest supporters on Capitol Hill to discuss strategy, and to advocate to new friends for their support of hemp’s policy agenda.”
While we and most other hemp industry watchers have long learned to tamp down our expectations in these situations, we will monitor closely for more rumblings from D.C. and share developments as they unfold.
Multi-state cannabis operators (MSOs) are making millions from the legalized industry. Meanwhile, many of the communities most impacted by cannabis prohibition have yet to experience an economic boost from legalization. To combat this troubling trend, New York State Democratic Senator James Sanders Jr. is introducing the Cannabis Community Reinvestment Act (CCRA).
This initiative is backed by the National Cannabis Party (NCP), representatives of which will join the senator for his announcement on Thursday, April 7.
The CCRA bill would require MSOs to reinvest in communities disproportionately impacted by cannabis prohibition. This might include building economic and cultural institutions in regions that have been most impacted by cannabis prohibition.
Sen. Sanders feels MSOs have a responsibility to reinvest in local communities to create economic uplift for all who have suffered as a result of the war on drugs. “The war on drugs unleashed severe damage and ruined many lives — particularly in communities of color,” he said.
“My bill will ensure the companies that profit the most from the legalization of cannabis will contribute part of their profits back into the communities most harmed by the war on drugs,” Sanders said.
The Marijuana Regulation and Taxation Act (MRTA) became law in New York State in 2021, legalizing adult-use cannabis. The act created the Office of Cannabis Management to regulate the new industry.
It was also charged with creating economic and social justice initiatives to facilitate equal access to opportunities in the cannabis sector.
The CCRA bill would augment the efforts undertaken by the Office of Cannabis Management to create a more equitable industry.
As supporters of the bill, the NCP advocates for national cannabis reform and is especially devoted to creating more equitable access to the plant and the economic opportunities that coincide with legalization.
Sephida Artis-Mills, president and co-founder of the NCP, believes the MRTA is a crucial step in advancing access. “The power belongs to the people, and so does the plant. To control the way people choose their medicine, and overall wellness, is a civil rights issue we need to address,” Artis-Mills said.
Prolific MC and cannabis advocate Redman, who co-founded the NCP, supports the mission of Sen. Sanders. “We can actually help regulate our own laws and help communities,” Redman said.

Italy is leading the way with preserving the specific right of home grow in Europe, but this is still a thorny political issue just about everywhere on the continent.
Italy is not letting up on the cannabis home grow conversation. Indeed, after the Constitutional Court refused to allow a cannabis referendum, the issue has refused to die. It now appears that a legislative mandate allowing home cultivation of up to four plants for personal use is headed for the Italian federal legislature.
Whether it passes or not is another question, but the truth of the matter is that the Italians have been one of the leading proponents of home grow in Europe for the last several years.
Everyone else? Not so much.
Why not?
The Top Reasons Home Grow is Not Popular Within the Cannabis Industry
There are several reasons that home grow is not popular both in political discussions about legalization and the industry itself. These include:
Home grow is hard to legislate, monitor, and control. The arguments against it include: people who grow their own cannabis at home could sell it; somehow poison themselves and/or those to whom they distribute; expose minors to high levels of THC.
Even in situations, however, where home grow must be licensed (see Canada and certain U.S. states) or performed in a non-profit setting that is also licensed, it is still not popular with the powers that be. This is because such collectives will always offer cheaper prices than commercial cannabis – whether it is medically designated or “just” recreational.” This is a direct threat to the “for-profit” medical and recreational industry.
It cannot be taxed and often is involved in “grey market” distribution.
However, in an environment where patients are repeatedly denied access because cannabis is too expensive, it is precisely the sickest cannabis users who are being left out of the revolution.
Solutions
There are several options on the table in Europe right now. The bottom line is that with decriminalization, home grow will have to be at least slightly regulated. It is unlikely it can be completely banned. This means a licensing system – perhaps similar to a dog license in Germany. However, how many plants will be allowed (and what the penalties will be for having more than this minimum amount) is a different conversation – and further one that for now has largely been left off the table.
However, it is a critical step in the normalization of the entire discussion. And as full and final legalization comes to Europe, one that cannot be left out of the room forever.

Cannabis & Tech Today: Did growing up in the Denver area play a part in your decision to enter the CBD space? There’s such a cannabis culture here.
Ivan Moody: Most definitely. I mean, I grew up right outside of Boulder, in the Arvada, Golden area. That entire area, we were experimenting years before the rest of the country even caught on to it. Especially with Charlotte Figi and her situation with Charlotte’s Web …
I was surrounded by it from a very young age. As I’m sure you’ve noticed out there, it’s just a part of life. Holistic healing is something that Coloradoans especially and certain areas like Washington and California have really prided themselves on. So it’s been really cool to grow up around that.
C&T Today: You mentioned Charlotte Figi and seeing the concept evolve around cannabis as medicine. Was that part of your inspiration to launch Moody’s Medicinals?
IM: Of course. I mean, how could it not be? It was such a touching story, too. Again, to know that Charlotte’s parents had basically tried everything.
They had really run the gamut, and it was a last resort thing. She was actually the first publicized case. But at the end of the day, there were quite a few people in that situation around town.
So it was definitely an influence. But again, it’s something I’ve been using for years. And it was something, to be quite honest with you, that I was ashamed of at first.
I hate to use the word, ashamed, but you never know how to talk to people about it.
Most recently it’s been acceptable, but 10, or 15 years ago, bringing it up immediately made you look like you were just trying to find a reason to use drugs. It was really hard.
It’s still really hard to convince people that the benefits of it outweigh the stigma.
So I really wanted to surround myself with people who were driven, people who were involved in the idea of CBD and holistic health. I say holistic health, and I always feel like that spooks people. It’s really just a different style of natural medications and healing products.
Imagine being a heavy metal rock singer that’s known for screaming and using the F-bomb and just being this monster on stage, trying to convince people that there’s a healthier and more peaceful way of living without strapping yourself into a whole bunch of over-the-counter medications.
It’s a tough sale to say the least … But I really felt like it was a necessary evil for me to come out and say, “Hey, I use this on a daily basis to replace multiple medications.”
C&T Today: How has CBD played a role in your recovery?
IM: I know a lot of people out there in recovery who are continually fighting, constantly working to find something that’s going to help them. I replaced a few medications with CBD when I first got out of recovery. I was on sleeping medications, Trazodone, which is really addictive.
It builds up a tolerance, and it becomes almost impossible to sleep without. My appetite on the road was constantly in jeopardy because I have these small windows that I get to eat.
As a singer, my body is a temple. I know it’s a cliche, and it sounds [like] really cheesy, Wayne Newton kind of shit, but it’s a reality. It really is. So to take care of myself on the road and be able to eat right, I had to be able to create an appetite as I went …
So again, THC and CBD products, I put it in my water. It’s just something I really have been attracted to, and it helped me out.
C&T Today: That’s especially true for heavy metal singers — live performances are so physically demanding. I’m always in awe of it when I go to shows. Was that what inspired you to create Moody’s Medicinal throat spray? It’s not something I’ve seen in other product lines.
IM: That was the first. That and the water. For anybody that’s not in recovery, I’ll fill you in on a little detail. When you stop drinking or doing just about anything, you try to completely erase it from any part of your life.
And for me, that was changing everything from my hygiene products to cleaning products. Anything with alcohol in it, I had to fucking erase. So a good friend of mine, Jason Lacada out of Colorado, owns a dispensary up in Black Hawk.
He was sending me CBD oils, and I started putting them in my waters before I went on stage because I can sip them.
Some of the products I was trying, 90% of all the throat sprays on the market have either alcohol or glycerin or some kind of sugars that really make it impossible to do what they’re telling you they’re doing. Because if you put alcohol on your throat, it strips it.
So it was almost like completely defeating actually and a placebo to boot. So I wanted to make something that was all natural, that had no alcohol in it — not just because of my recovery, but because of the benefits that it has on my throat. When I was talking to Jackie [manager and partner in Moody’s Medicinals], she uses her voice 50 hours a day.
She’s on the phone. She’s making calls. She’s also a radio DJ. She’s got her own podcast. So she’s constantly using her throat.
I know a couple of coaches, one for the Denver Nuggets, one for the Denver Broncos. Again, constantly using their throats. When you put those alcohol-based sprays on your voice, all it does is strip you down, and it takes about three minutes of pain away, and then you’re right back where you started.
So I really wanted to make something that was not just for me as a singer, but for people who have to use their voice every day.
C&T Today: What was the inspiration behind your Dirty Poetry Book?
IM: Dirty Poetry, I got to tell you that’s a monster of its own. It was not something I did overnight. I mean, from the time I was about 13 years old until I was 18, I was in the system.
I was shuffled from group home to group home, detention centers and so on and so forth. Being in those kinds of places, you always have to keep journals and diaries of day-to-day stuff.
I went into my library, and I had like four shelves dedicated to all these old journals and these old diary writings. So I started sifting through them during COVID[-19].
Reading stuff that you wrote when you were 20 years old, 25, 30, and some of it was so scatterbrained, but it must have meant something at the time.
So it really brought to light these colors that I almost forgot were in my spectrum. And to see them really, it sparked a lot in me.
So it was something that I just wanted to put out because I thought it was interesting enough, and it definitely shows the public a side of me that I don’t necessarily think that they’ll be exposed to otherwise. I got to tell you, working with Blake Armstrong, anybody who sees the artwork in this thing is going to freak out.
This guy is a wicked genius. So when I handed him over these files, he sifted through them and these visuals are what he pictured when he read through. So it’s really a cool collaboration.
C&T Today: Do you find there are similarities between writing music and writing poetry?
IM: Oh, absolutely. I mean, it’s art. Music is sonic poetry. The entire universe is held together by it. Whether it be frequencies, energy, rhythms, algorithms. Music in itself is poetry. It’s the poetry of life. ϖ
