A French researcher has concluded that both current and lifetime cannabis use are associated with lower blood pressure levels after assessing the relationship between cannabis use and blood pressure among a population-based cohort of over 91,000 subjects. The research findings were recently published in the journal Nature: Scientific Reports.

The investigator reported: “In adjusted covariates models, lifetime heavy cannabis use was associated with decrease in both SBP [systolic blood pressure], DBP [diastolic blood pressure], and PP [pulse pressure] in both genders, but with a higher effect among women … Current cannabis use was associated with lower SBP levels in men and in women. Same results were observed for DBP and PP.”

He concluded, “Longitudinal studies are needed in general populations and then in hypertensive patients to highlight the potential lowered BP effect of cannabis in a medical use.”

A 2021 Israeli study of elderly hypertension subjects determined, “Cannabis treatment for three months was associated with a reduction in systolic and diastolic blood pressure, as well as heart rate.”

A U.S. study published last year in The American Journal of Medicine reported, “Current cannabis use was associated with lower resting heart rate” in middle-aged subjects. The administration of oral CBD extracts has also been associated with reduced blood pressure levels in healthy volunteers.

Numerous other studies have also demonstrated the ability of cannabinoids to influence blood pressure and other cardiovascular responses, though many of these effects are short-term in duration and subjects typically become tolerant to some of them (e.g., tachycardia).

According to a literature review published in the journal Neuropharmacology: “The endocannabinergic system plays an important cardiovascular regulatory role not only in pathophysiological conditions associated with excessive hypotension but also in hypertension. Pre-employment job discrimination is an ongoing concern for medical cannabis patients and recreational consumers across the country. The Washington Senate approved a bill Wednesday, Feb. 22, prohibiting employers from refusing to hire someone based on cannabis use outside of work. 

The bill (ESSB 5123) would bar employers from “discriminating against a person in hiring if the discrimination is based upon the person’s use of cannabis off the job and away from the workplace.”

Further, employers cannot refuse to hire an applicant if cannabinoids are identified in hair, blood, urine, or other bodily fluids.

Employers can still test for the presence of controlled substances, including cannabis, while the employee is working. Employers maintain the right to enforce a drug and alcohol free workplace. 

Federal employers are exempt from the bill, as are positions requiring high-level security clearance. It does not apply to the airline or aerospace industries. It also does not apply to positions that are safety-oriented for which on-the-job impairment presents a risk of death.

Even in legalized states, many employers require job applicants to test negative for the presence of cannabis before they can be considered for a job. Current tests for cannabis do not indicate when the substance was consumed and are therefore a poor measure of impairment. 

The staff summary of public testimony on the original bill noted, “Cannabis metabolites are in the body for weeks, which is different from alcohol and other drugs. The status quo currently discriminates against medical cannabis patients.”

Burl Bryson, executive director of The Cannabis Alliance, spoke with legislators in January, stating job candidates could use cannabis during non-work hours and still test positive weeks later.

“If the same approach were applied to alcohol, employers would refuse employment to anyone who enjoyed a beer or a glass of wine on the weekend.” Bryson added, “We all know that this is not a workable standard.”

The bill does not protect employees from drug screenings for cannabis while they are employed. Employers would still be permitted to fire employees who test positive for cannabis use after a workplace accident. 

Nevada and California passed similar measures to protect job applicants in 2019 and 2022, respectively. Though Washington legalized adult-use cannabis in 2012, Initiative 502 did not contain language to protect job seekers from discrimination.

Senate Bill 5123 is now being considered by the Washington House of Representatives.

The “Science of Small” — What is a Nanoemulsion?

Cannabis is a highly variable, natural product that requires refining. When manufacturers attempt to incorporate it into food or beverage products, which require specific controls, the challenges can be numerous. 

The bioavailability and onset of nanoemulsions are much better, in large part because it simply takes longer for the body to break down and absorb bigger fat droplets. Only when the droplets are sufficiently tiny can they be metabolized and absorbed properly.

A 20-nanometer droplet vs. a 120-nanometer droplet means presenting the body with something that is much more digestible.  

There are three main benefits of using nanoemulsions. The first is stability. High-quality nanoemulsions provide a very robust and stable environment for cannabinoid oil droplets, making it highly unlikely that the cannabinoid will find something else in the food matrix that it’s happier attaching to.

The second is dispersibility. Stable emulsions are more readily dispersible into a food matrix and offer a very high level of consistency.

For example, if a manufacturing facility has a beverage tank and the manufacturer needs to ensure that the active ingredients get completely dispersed throughout the tank, a high-quality nanoemulsion can be uniformly and readily dispersed from top to bottom and side to side.

The third is physical stability. As long as the manufacturer does a great job of producing a robust system that will survive the processing (e.g. cooking, pasteurization) the nanoemulsion droplets will be so stable in their macro-environment and their micro-environment that when they’re dispersed into a food matrix, they will stay in that conformation.

High-quality nanoemulsions can greatly improve consistency and bioavailability compared to traditional formats, but how can a manufacturer know if they’ve found a high-quality nanoemulsion?

How to Recognize a High-Quality Nanoemulsion

A simple and cost-effective way to recognize a high-quality nanoemulsion is to visually assess clarity, color, and consistency. Well-made nanoemulsions should be clear or nearly clear.

The reason for this is that the bigger the lipid particles are, the more the visible light is scattered, resulting in a more opaque or milky appearance.

This is the same phenomenon that causes milk to be opaque. Milk contains large fat droplets, meaning that when light hits it, it scatters in all colors and all directions, and the milk appears white. 

A high-quality nanoemulsion with very small particles — about 20 nanometers — will be clear on a visual inspection because it will not be scattering visible light; rather, it scatters ultraviolet light.

In this way, a visual inspection can offer a low-tech, easy method of identifying if a nanoemulsion is high-quality. As the mean diameter of the particle size goes down and gets smaller, clarity and stability will go up.

The second way to test the quality of a nanoemulsion is to put it in a centrifuge and spin it, subjecting the liquid to very high gravity. Large droplets have a density difference due to the liquid surrounding them and, as a result, tend to separate.

Correspondingly, a darker layer may appear on the top or bottom of the emulsion, depending on the density. A high-quality nanoemulsion will demonstrate no change after being spun in a centrifuge. 

The third method of testing the quality of a nanoemulsion is via laser scattering particle size analysis. This type of scientific analysis involves shining a light into the sample and requires a lab.

A high-end analytical tool like laser scattering lab testing will provide much more information by probing the sample with light to determine what kind of environment the droplets are in and, more specifically, their size.

Once the nanoemulsions dissolve into a food matrix (be it a gummy, lozenge, or confection), it’s possible to use light scattering particle analysis to confirm the nanoemulsions were 20 nanometers when they went in and remained 20 nanometers in the finished product. 

We’ve established that nanoemulsions can make very stable, consistent products, but what about measuring their performance? 

How to Measure Nanoemulsion Performance

Putting cannabinoids and terpenes into edibles is a tricky business. The best way to measure performance is through human uptake studies, in which people consume the product and have their blood drawn over time. 

The blood is then put into a quadrupole mass spectrometer to measure the nanograms or nanomolar concentration of cannabinoids in their blood. It’s a very objective method of determining whether or not a product is doing what it claims to do.

Another performance measurement option is Caco-2 GI permeability assays, wherein a layer of cells separates two liquids, and the test measures how fast the materials migrate from one liquid to the other.

They are great, but they’re also relative because they can only indicate that product X is better than product Y and can’t specifically show how long the update takes and what happens after. So, the preferred testing method is to use a blood draw.

Overall, pharmacokinetic testing data has demonstrated that high-quality nanoemulsions offer excellent uptake, faster effects, and more efficient bioavailability, all of which can provide manufacturers with a real advantage and a strong point of differentiation in a competitive marketplace. 

Each of those factors also helps ensure products will deliver a more rewarding and consistent consumer experience, in turn encouraging repeat purchases. Cannabis product manufacturers should not underestimate the value of providing consumers with a consistent product experience where the consumer can trust the expected outcome and have the desired result, time after time.

What are your first thoughts when you think of New York? Do you picture Times Square and all the bustle of New York City? While it’s tempting to imagine the Statue of Liberty beckoning travelers to the skyscrapers of Manhattan, much of New York is rural. 

The Empire State is home to 33,000 family farms and nearly 7 million acres of farmland. It ranks top ten in the production of more than 30 staple commodities, ranging from apples to onions to dairy products.

Its temperate climate is also perfect for hemp production. The state’s Domestic Hemp Production Program has already approved over 30,000 acres for hemp farming.

While the potential for hemp is exciting, the sexier side of legalization is in the retail adult-use market.

In September of 2021, New York legalized recreational cannabis, opening the doors to an estimated $4.2 billion industry.

It has the potential to become one of the nation’s largest cannabis markets. 

State lawmakers have taken a progressive approach to legalization, allowing consumers more liberties than other legalized states.

Adults over the age of 21 are allowed to possess up to three ounces of flower and 24 grams of concentrates. They can store up to five pounds in their homes and can grow their own supply with up to 12 plants per household. 

Most innovative is their policy around public consumption. In New York State, if the area permits tobacco consumption, you can smoke cannabis there.

This is contrary to many other legalized states where public consumption is not permitted — which creates a conundrum for cannabis tourists.

In all, the state’s legal marketplace is shaping up to be one of the more robust and welcoming cannabis industries in the nation.

In this Tech Zone, we’ll take a look at some of the companies and innovators taking part in the Empire State’s newest economic opportunity.

New York is a Perfect Fit for Female Business Owners

Did you know companies led by women tend to be more profitable than those operated by men?

They also produce more than twice the revenue per dollar invested according to research from the Arcview Group and the National Cannabis Industry Association.

If women are so masterful at running a business, why did MJBizDaily report that in 2021 only 22% of executive-level positions in cannabis were held by women? 

That number has actually decreased since 2019. This disturbing trend underlines the importance of supporting women-owned businesses, especially in developing markets like New York.

Organizations like Women Grow are vital to creating more gender parity in the cannabis sector. They can offer advice, connections, and support to help women entrepreneurs launch their businesses. 

It’s an industry that may seem daunting for new entrants. Tanya Osborne, director of community engagement and digital production for Women Grow said the most frequent question she hears from women is how to enter the space.

“My answer usually is don’t reinvent the wheel; push the one you have, just in this cannabis lane,” Osborne said. 

The next hurdle is funding. Osborne noted women receive a fraction of the funding showered on their male counterparts, “and it’s even less for Black and Brown women-led companies.”

That’s why Women Grow showcased more than 200 women-owned businesses on its platform in 2021. It’s also why the organization hosted the Women in Cannabis Lobby Day in 2020 and 2021 to push legalization in New York State.

“We are determined to keep opening the doors wider to help create an industry that will be filled with diverse women businesses and leaders,” Women Grow President Gia Morón said.

As more states embrace legalization, women-led initiatives are helping ease the transition from an illicit to a regulated market. Melissa Moore, director of civil systems reform for the Drug Policy Alliance said Women Grow has been key to helping people learn about the cannabis industry.

“Especially in New York, we’ve seen how attending sessions hosted by Women Grow has broadened people’s understanding of the space and how they might fit in,” Moore said.

The United Nations Development Council determined increasing female employment rates in the top 37 high-income countries to match the female employment rates in Sweden would boost gross domestic product by $6 trillion a year.

It’s numbers like these that should encourage everyone to partner with women-owned companies (WOCs). 

Cannaclusive Director of Community and Strategy Kassia Graham has seen the power of such partnerships first hand.

“Through partnering with Women Grow, Cannaclusive has been able to aid in putting small, new, WOC-owned brands in the spotlight,” said Graham.

For all New Yorkers watching the cannabis industry unfold, it’s essential to actively take part in women’s empowerment in the sector.

Buy from WOCs, invest in their ideas, and encourage them to take part in this lucrative sector. It may not be an easy path, but it’s one worth pursuing. “Rejection will not deter us, it inspires us,” Morón said.

As of March of 2021, people 21 years of age and older can legally purchase cannabis in the state of New York. But legal doesn’t mean easy.

Australia ‘s Parliamentary Budget Office recently released a report that presents two options for legalizing adult-use cannabis in Australia. Part of the report also includes projections for possible industry tax revenue. Per Newsfeed:

According to the PBO report , the first option calls for the creation of the Cannabis National Agency (CANA), which would act as the sole wholesaler between growers and retailers, set wholesale cannabis prices and issue licenses to potential cannabis owners. cannabis companies. Ideally, the agency would be funded entirely by production and retail licensing.

This option would legalize cannabis for anyone aged 18 and over, with no restrictions on how much a person can buy. This approach would also create penalties for selling to underage people, as with alcohol. Cannabis would be available to “overseas visitors”, and residents would be allowed to grow up to six plants. Finally, recreational sales would be “subject to the Goods and Services Tax (GST) as well as a 25% excise duty on sales including the GST”.

The second option contains all the provisions of the first option, except for the final recommendation, which would increase the excise tax to 15% instead of 25%.

The report estimates that legalization would generate as much as A$28 billion in the first ten years after a regulated adult-use industry was launched. It’s worth noting that the projected figure is largely based on a snapshot in time.

British investigators assessed the safety and efficacy of cannabis-derived products in 97 patients diagnosed with migraine and other headache disorders.

Study subjects were participants in the UK Medical Cannabis Registry, and each of them possessed a doctor’s authorization to access cannabis.

Study participants consumed cannabis by either vaporizing marijuana flowers or by ingesting plant-derived extracts containing both THC and CBD. Researchers assessed subjects’ symptoms compared to baseline at one, three, and six-months.

Cannabis therapy was associated with sustained improvements in pain, anxiety, sleep, and other health-related outcomes.

Fewer than one-in-five patients reported experiencing any adverse events from cannabis. Most events were perceived to be mild.

“However, whilst these are awaited, the present study outcomes with respect to safety and efficacy, provides useful insights to inform current clinical practice.”

According to a systematic review of the literature published in December, the inhalation of cannabis flowers is generally effective and well-tolerated among patients with migraine.

Authors of the review concluded: “[M]edical marijuana has a significant clinical response by reducing the length and frequency of migraines. No severe adverse effects were noted. Due to its effectiveness and convenience, medical marijuana therapy may be helpful for patients suffering from migraines.”

Patients enrolled in the UK Medical Cannabis Registry with diagnoses of post-traumatic stress, depression, refractory epilepsy, and inflammatory bowel disease have also demonstrated symptomatic improvements following cannabis therapy.
